APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • Apache install_ihs does not correctly determine if the directory
    path contains symbolic links.
If it cannot detect it programatically, a note should be issued
to warn the user to use the full pathname.

Local fix

  • As a circumvention execute the script with an absolute path and
    it will use that.

Problem summary

  • ****************************************************************
    * USERS AFFECTED: Users with symlinks between their root *
    * filesystem and the canonical path to IBM *
    * HTTP Server installation, invoking *
    *                 "install_ihs" with a relative path-name,     *
    * and performing an installation with a *
    * shell configured with "set +o logical" *
    ****************************************************************
    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: IBM HTTP Server runtime contains *
    * links back to the physical path it *
    * was originally mounted on, instead of *
    * the logical (symlinked) path. *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION:                                              *
    ****************************************************************
When the z/OS shell is running without the "set -o logical"
setting, and install_ihs is run via relative path, the product
binaries will be symlinks into the physical path instead of
    the logical (symlinked) path.
For example if /usr is a symlink to /usr1 during install-time,
and the above conditions are met, product binaries will refer
to /usr1 instesad of /usr. SInce some z/OS maintenance
strategies make this arrangement commonplace, the preferable
behavior is to link the runtime binaries to /usr.

Problem conclusion

  • The install_ihs script now tolerates relative paths without
"set -o logical", but only in the case where the very first
    path component (e.g. /usr) is a symlink.

APAR PM08370 is currently targeted for inclusion in Service
Level (Fix Pack) 7.0.0.9 of WebSphere Application Server V7.0.
