IBM Image Services introduces support for ECS 2.2.1, the new Dell EMC technology

News

Abstract

ECS 2.2.1 EMC device is fully qualified with Image Services 4.1.2 and 4.2.0 on all supported platforms. You can migrate from EMC Centera devices to EMC ECS.

Content

Dell EMC is phasing out Centera storage devices and replacing them with the new generation Elastic Cloud Storage (ECS) devices. ECS supports the Centera API which is used by Image Services Integral Single Document Storage (ISDS). ECS 2.2.1 supports chronological retention which includes the ability to set and extend retention.

This announcement allows Image Services customers to use the new EMC technology ECS.

The ECS 2.2.1 EMC device has been fully qualified with Image Services 4.1.2 and 4.2.0 on all the supported platforms. It is possible to migrate from EMC Centera devices to EMC ECS. From an Image Services Integral SDS customer perspective, the ECS device will operate exactly as the Centera hardware device.

Requirements
IS 4.1.2 FP 24 and Interim fix (is_4.1.2.24_ OSNAME-IF544789)
IS 4.2.0 FP 13 and Interim fix (is_4.2.0.13_ OSNAME-IF544789)
Interim Fix needs to be applied to fully qualify ECS on above two versions of Image services.

Supported configuration
Centera API SDK 3.2.705 and up is used.

Deployment
Procedure for configuring ECS is identical to the configuration for a Centera using the SDSw_centera connector library. Refer to Integral SDS user guide for more details about configuring Centera storage device for respective release.
To verify that ECS has been correctly configured as an Integral SDS device via fn_edit, refer to the example elog entry below generated when Image Services is started:

Dynamic Connector library: 'SDSw_centera'
Device specific info: 'ECS (version 2-2100-0-0) libSDSw Ver=1.0,
Mode=basic, SDK v3.2.705 (Dec 12 2016 18:32:00)'
Capacity: 490.000000GB (513802240KB)
Used: 53.958282GB (56579360KB) (11.01%)
Free: 436.041718GB (457222880KB) (88.99%)
Supports EBR=NO holds=NO retention_extend=YES

Here, version ECS 2-2100 means ECS 2.2.1.

Known Issues
  1. ECS 2.2 does not support the Centera Event Based Retention (EBR) feature. One can use Image Services virtual EBR for simulating Event based Retention feature. Refer to the Integral SDS user guide for a detailed explanation on virtual EBR and how to manage virtual EBR documents with the sds_update_retention background (BKG) tool.
  2. ECS 2.2 does not support litigation hold or release.
