Summary
InstallAnywhere generates installation executables that are vulnerable to a DLL-planting vulnerability
Vulnerability Details
CVEID: CVE-2016-4560
DESCRIPTION: Flexera InstallAnywhere could allow a local attacker to gain elevated privileges on the system, caused by an untrusted search path. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability using a Trojan horse DLL in the current working directory of a setup-launcher executable file to gain elevated privileges on the system.

Remediation/Fixes
|
Product | VRMF | Remediation/First Fix |
| IBM Case Manager | 5.2.1 | 5.2.1.5 FP005 Select appropriate platform and file ending in -FP005 Note: this fix will be incorporated into all future ICM 5.2.1 fix packs. |
| IBM Case Manager | 5.2.0 | 5.2.0.4 FP004 Select appropriate platform and file ending in -FP004 Note: this fix will be incorporated into all future ICM 5.2.0 fix packs. |
| IBM Case Manager | 5.1.1 | Follow the instructions under the Workarounds and Mitigations section shown below. |
Workarounds and Mitigations
Follow the below steps to work around the InstallAnywhere vulnerability:
When installing IBM Case Manager, perform these additional steps to avoid an untrusted search path vulnerability where users could gain increased privileges:
1. Clear all contents (files, sub-directories and etc.,) of your default download directory/location, if any.
2. Create a new secure directory in temporary location (such that elevated privileges required to access this directory or standalone privileges so that no one else can access this directory).
3. Copy/extract the setup.exe executable (generated by InstallShield / InstallAnywhere) to the secure directory created in Step 2.
4. Using the certUtil checksum utility that comes by default with Windows, verify the installer's checksum matches the IBM-approved value (table below).
| File | MD5 hash of file |
| 5.1.0.3-ICM-WIN-FP003.EXE | 98 47 07 a5 3a 35 99 a6 92 7a a5 fe fc 8f 62 12 |
| 5.1.1.3-ICM-WIN-FP003.EXE | 53 80 c4 27 a4 ae 5e a3 b6 8a 30 c6 3d 8f 1d 7f |
| 5.2.0.3-ICM-WIN-FP003.EXE | db 1a dd ab ff e4 46 7b 24 81 9c 3d eb 05 f1 db |
| 5.2.1.4-ICM-WIN-FP004.EXE | 27 9a 53 bf 22 0e 2f 29 85 fa 74 05 99 02 97 50 |
certUtil -hashfile 5.2.1.4-ICM-WIN-FP004.EXE MD5
Then you verify the hash for that file from the above table.
5. As the user who created the directory in step 2, launch the executable from the secure directory and wait until it completes.
6. If you have chosen to perform Step 5 with a different user than the one that previously installed the Fix Pack, apply the following workaround to set back to the original user (the one you intend to use for updating later fix packs):
In the upgrade.properties file found under <Case Manager install directory>/_uninstaller directory, before attempting to upgrade using a fix pack :
- Set the PREVIOUS_INSTALL_USER to null
or
- Set the PREVIOUS_INSTALL_USER to same user as current user .
