"Verifying checksums..." displayed on the LCD of the QRadar Network Security sensor

Question & Answer

Question

Why is a "Verifying checksums..." message is displayed on the LCD of the QRadar Network Security (XGS) sensor during the boot process?

Answer

This message is displayed when the appliance has FIPS enabled and is verifying the FIPS checksums during the boot process. More information on FIPS can be found in the FIPS documentation.

If the message fails to clear itself, IBM Support will need to examine a serial console trace that is collected during the boot process. You can gather a serial console trace on the XGS by using the following instructions:
  1. Connect the provided serial console cable to the console port on the security appliance and the serial port on a computer.
  2. On the computer, open software that allows serial port access. A commonly used option for this is PuTTY, which is a free Telnet/SSH client.
  3. Create a new serial connection. Use the following settings if using PuTTY. Use similar settings if using a different software.

    Session > Logging

    Connection > Serial

  4. Click Open to establish a connection.
  5. Reboot the system to replicate checksum messages and allow the trace to run until the necessary information is captured.
  6. Retrieve the C:|putty.log file from computer and submit it to IBM Support for review.
