Error description

  • When performing an UPGRADEDB from a TSM version prior to V5.1
    and using TSM server V5114, V5150, V5151, or V5152 while
    doing the UPGRADEDB, the time to perform the upgraddb may
    make the server unavailable for an extended period of time.

Problem summary

    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: During the UPGRADEDB processing from    *
    *                      a server installation prior to V51,     *
    *                      the processing may take a long time.    *
    *                      Specifically, the upgradedb may take    *
    *                      many hours to complete due to a         *
    *                      conversion operation being performed.   *
    *                      The time for this conversion was        *
    *                      significantly slowed down in APAR       *
    *                      IC34309 which was delivered in PATCH    *
    *                      5.1.1.4 and PTF 5.1.5.                  *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION: Perform the upgrade to V5.1.x of the server  *
    *                 using a PTF of PATCH that contains the       *
    *                 fix for this apar or perform the upgrade     *
    *                 using the base install package for           *
    *                 V5.1.0.0 or PTF V5.1.1.0.  After performing  *
    *                 the upgradedb at this level, than apply the  *
    *                 latest PTF or PATCH.                         *
    ****************************************************************
    The TSM server algorithm used to convert a database table
    during the UPGRADE DB processing had additional checking
    added to it in APAR IC34309 which caused the time needed
    for this operation to take longer.
    

Problem conclusion

  • The TSM server may require a long time (many hours) to
    convert a table used to manage "SYSTEM OBJECT" filespaces
    on the server.  The time needed for this conversion may be
    reduced by performing the UPGRADEDB using a V5.1.x server
    PTF or PATCH that has this fix in it or one prior to the
    introduction of the fix for apar IC34309.
    
    Other steps may be done to further reduce the amount of
    time necessary for performing this conversion when upgrading
    from an earlier server version.  These steps are:
    
    1) Run EXPIRATION to completion so that all files eligible
    for expiration have been deleted.
    
    2) If you are upgrading from a V4.2.x server level, install
    the most recent maintenance (PTF 4.2.3.0) and any available
    patches and than use the "CLEANUP BACKUPGROUPS" utility.
    This will remove any orphaned groups.
    
    By performing these two steps, the conversion processing
    will run more quickly by processing the fewest possible
    number of entries.  However, even by taking these steps,
    and performing the upgrade as recommended in this apar,
    this conversion may still take many hours to complete.
