Error description

  • When chvg -G is run on a concurrent volume group,
it throws the below error entries in errlog.

    IDENTIFIER TIMESTAMP T C RESOURCE_NAME DESCRIPTION
    CAD234BE 0220223414 U H LVDD QUORUM LOST, VOLUME GROUP
    CLOSING
    F7DDA124 0220223414 U H LVDD PHYSICAL VOLUME DECLARED
    MISSING

Local fix

Problem summary

  • For conc-capable or other multi-node-varyon-protection enabled
VGs, after converting the VG to Scalable Type VG, using chvg
-G, these errors will be seen in the errpt: CAD234BE U H
LVDD QUORUM LOST, VOLUME GROUP CLOSING F7DDA124 U H
    LVDD PHYSICAL VOLUME DECLARED MISSING

But no further impact will be seen unless the VG only has a
single disk in it. In this case, 'varyonvg' command will fail
and have to be forced with -f flag.

The reason is that the last step in chvg -G, to varyoff the VG,
is initiating a metadata write to clear the 'varyon state' of
the VG. This write goes to the end of the newly expanded
metadata area on disk, but the LVM kernel does not yet allow
metadta writes to go that far, and fails the write.

Problem conclusion

  • Correct chvg -G code to not try to clear the 'varyon state' of
the VG, since it's not actually during chvg -G anyways.
This avoids writing the metadata with the disk/driver in
mismatched state, and avoids any errors.
