Error description

  • Environment: GPFS - 3.5.0.7

    /home/jimbob> lspv
    mkdir: cannot access directory /var/mmfs/tmp.
    /var/mmfs/tmp: Permission denied
    mkdir: cannot access directory /var/mmfs/ssl.
    /var/mmfs/ssl: Permission denied
    /usr/lpp/mmfs/bin/mmlspv[29]: .[187]: .:
    /usr/lpp/mmfs/bin/mmsdrfsdef.AIX: cannot open
    [Permission denied]
    hdisk0  00cb0ade89df311a  rootvg  active

    GPFS at 3.5.0.7 introduced this error message, which was
    prompted by switching from using ksh to their own mmksh.

Local fix

  • Change
    #!/usr/lpp/mmfs/bin/mmksh
    back to
    #!/bin/ksh
    in /usr/lpp/mmfs/bin/mmlspv

Problem summary

  • With gpfs 3.5.0.7 or greater installed, when a non-root user
    runs the lspv command, errors will be generated as above.
    lspv is a suid program and internally calls gpfs mmlspv with
    effective uid of root. This causes mmlspv to fail.

Problem conclusion

  • Temporarily change euid in lspv to match uid just while we call
    mmlspv.
