Problem summary

  • THE MAINTENANCE LISTED HERE IS A LIST OF KNOWN PROBLEMS
RELATING TO USING DFDSS AS THE DATAMOVER FOR DFHSM. THE LIST
NEEDS TO BE CHECKED FOR APPLICABILITY IN YOUR ENVIRONMENT.
THE STATUS SHOWN MAY NOT REFLECT THE MOST CURRENT STATUS AS THE
APAR IS ONLY UPDATED PERIODICALLY. YOU WILL NEED TO CHECK THE
PTFS FOR THEIR CURRENT STATUS. THE MAINTENANCE LISTED MAKES
THE ASSUMPTION THAT, UP TO AND INCLUDING, PUT TAPE 9202 IS
    APPLIED TO YOUR SYSTEM.

    IBM STATUS AND DIRECTION
    ========================
    .
DFHSM Datamover was introduced with DFHSM 2.5.0 and
DFDSS 2.5.0. The original intent was to allow
additional data sets to be system-managed.
    .
DFDSS was unknowingly processing invalid ISV data:
    .
ISV (Independent Software Vendors) do not always
follow standard access method rules when
       developing applications. Since DFHSM is
automated, and selects all data sets on each
volume for processing, ISV data was being
processed unknowningly. Even if vendors had a
"warning" against moving their data in their
publications, there was no way to notify DFHSM
       directly.
    .
    .
Successful Backup/Migrate did not guarantee return:
    .
Because DFDSS processes data sets using TRACK I/O,
it did not detect any access-violations when
backing up or migrating invalid ISV data. Such
       violations include: invalid PDS directory
       structures, embedded end-of-file marks, invalid
VSAM index structures, and inappropriate DSORG
       values.
    .
    .
As a temporary measure, IBM produced some PTF's
that provided additional granularity of support.
This support is provided via new keyword parameters
    on the SETSYS DATAMOVER command.
    .
      1) Customers can select which data to process
      2) MIGRATE and BACKUP selections can be different
    .
    .
    REVISED IBM STRATEGY
    ====================
    .
By August 1992, IBM management and technical
support determined a revised strategy for DFHSM
    2.6.0/DFDSS 2.5.0 and for the new DFSMS/MVS 1.1.0
product that focuses on the customer's need for
both function and quality. Each is discussed
    below:
    .
    DFSMS/MVS 1.1.0
    ---------------
    .
The Strategy for DFSMS/MVS 1.1.0 involves the
    following:
    .
      1) DFSMShsm will use BSAM, QSAM and IDCAMS
access methods for the migration and
backup of certain dataset types, including:
         ICF catalogs, PDS, SUL, uncataloged,
cataloged in CVOL, and unmovable data.
These will be documented in the DFSMShsm
         Implementation and Customization Guide.
      2) DFSMShsm will use DFSMSdss for migration and
backup of all other user data.
      3) DFSMShsm will simplify SETSYS DATAMOVER by
eliminating the need to select a method to use.
    .
This allows IBM to re-engineer code to improve
    quality to the customer.
    .
You may process PDS data sets with DFSMSdss via
Batch or API. See the RFA Announcement Letter on
additional considerations for the DFSMS/MVS 1.1.0
    product.
    .
    .
    DFHSM 2.6.0/DFDSS 2.5.0
    -----------------------
    Current Status 01/05/93
    -----------------------
    .
IBM's evaluation testing is complete. IBM has a
high level of confidence that you can MIGRATE and
BACKUP all data safely, provided the following:
    .
      1) All closed maintenance identified in this
         Informational APAR is installed.
      2) All open maintenance identified on this
Informational APAR is evaluated to determine
         the impact to your installation.
      3) Evaluate each ISV application for exceptions
(data that should not be migrated)
    .
If you have ISV (Independent Software Vendor)
applications, contact each vendor to ensure that
standard access methods are used. If standard
access methods are not used, you can restrict
migration for these data sets as follows:
    .
System-Managed: Assign a Management Class with
                       Attribute of NONE for "Command
                       or Auto Migrate"
    .
Un-Managed: Use the DFHSM SETMIG command
                       with the NOMIGRATION parameter
    .
    .
DFHSM supports the following data set types using
DFDSS as its data mover method:
    .
      1) All Physical Sequential, single volume and SMS-only
         multi-volume.
      2) Direct Access (BDAM)
      3) Empty VSAM data sets (HIGH-USED-RBA is ZERO)
      4) PDSE (Partioned Data Set/Extended)
      5) Long-Record VSAM (LRECL>32K)
    .
DFHSM will use BSAM access methods only to process
PDS data sets. DFDSS will not be used even if the
    SETSYS DATAMOVER options request it.
    .
VSAM data sets not listed above are considered
"Exportable". DFHSM will use IDCAMS access methods
only to process Exportable VSAM data sets. DFDSS
will not be used even if the SETSYS DATAMOVER options
    request it.
    .
It is IBM's intent to re-investigate the Permanent
Restriction closure of APAR OY57276. Any changes for
support in this area will be reflected in this
    informational APAR.
    .
    COMMUNICATION OF STATUS
    =======================
All problems known to IBM that affect this support
will be reflected in this Informational APAR.
    .
It is IBM's intent to communicate our status more
regularly via this Informational APAR, as well as
traditional communication such as WSC FLASH and
    DFSMS Newsletter.
    .
