Security Bulletin
Summary
By using malicious compressed qcow2 disk images, an authenticated user might consume large amounts of disk space for each image. This scenario can potentially result in a Denial of Service attack on Nova compute nodes (CVE-2013-4463). In the non-default case where use_cow_images=False and malicious qcow images are transferred from Glance, an authenticated user might still consume large amounts of disk space for each instance using the malicious image. This scenario also potentially results in a Denial of Service attack on Nova compute nodes (CVE-2013-4469).
Vulnerability Details
CVE ID: CVE-2013-4463
DESCRIPTION:
OpenStack Compute (Nova) is vulnerable to a denial of service, which is caused by an error that is related to the control of the size of disk images. A remote authenticated attacker might exploit this vulnerability using malicious compressed qcow2 disk images to consume an overly large amount of disk space.

Affected Products and Versions
IBM SmartCloud Orchestrator V2.2 and 2.3
Remediation/Fixes
The recommended solution is to apply IBM SmartCloud Orchestrator V2.3.0 Fix Pack 1 as soon as practical.
Workarounds and Mitigations
The exposure applies only to KVM regions.
Ensure that IBM SmartCloud Orchestrator end users do not have access to the compute nodes.
