mv less-382-1.aix5.1.ppc.rpm less_382_1.aix5.1.ppc.rpm
(see dashes replace by underscores)
smit install_latest and select that package will fail to
install with :

but are not valid RPM packages:
less-382-1

Local fix

  • The package file name must start with the output of what
rpm -qp <package_file> returns.

Problem summary

  • RPM FAILS TO INSTALL VIA SMIT IF IT WAS RENAMED

Problem conclusion

  • In testing for illegal RPM names allow for RPM renaming.
