IT08869: Platform Agent runs into installation issues or SLP advertisement issues due to rogue 'cimserver.exe' process active

APAR status

  • Closed as documentation error.

Error description

  • For a Windows Operating System, a process named 'cimserver.exe'
can be in running state which can hinder proper functioning of
IBM Systems Director Platform Agent (PA). This process can be
part of another product (Example: LSI or Pegasus).

This rogue process, while in active state, can cause PA
installation issues or issues with Service Location Protocol
(SLP) not being able to properly advertise for Web-Based
Enterprise Management (WBEM) ports used by PA (ports 5988,
    5989).

For PA installation, user may see a message posted indicating
'Port 5988 or 5989 in use' error.

For SLP advertisement issues, user will not see the
advertisements for service:wbem and its corresponding attributes
    when listing all SLP advertisements.
To see this, the user can run the following command on the
endpoint system, from the C:\Program Files (x86)\Common
    Files\ibm\icc\slp\bin directory:

    'slp_query.exe --address=127.0.0.1 --type=service:*'

    Impact:
User will not able to manage a Windows end point running with
    PA.

Local fix

  • User needs to look for and end the 'cimserver.exe' process
followed by another attempt of PA installation (if having
install issues) or end and restart all PA services (if having
    SLP advertisement issues).

User needs to run the following commands in order to restart all
    PA services:

    net stop ibmpawatchdog
    net stop gatherwin
    net stop reposwin
    net stop wmicimserver
    net stop cimlistener
    net stop tier1slp
    net stop ibmsa

    taskkill /f /im wmicpa.exe

    wait 5 minutes

    net start ibmsa
    net start tier1slp
    net start cimlistener
    net start wmicimserver
    net start gatherwin
    net start reposwin
    net start ibmpawatchdog

Problem summary

  • User must end the rogue 'cimserver.exe' process, in order for
the PA install and function, to work properly on a Windows end
    point.

For SLP advertisement issues, once corrected, slp_query.exe
output should include the service:wbem information:

    URL: service:wbem:http://xx.xx.xx.xx:5988
    URL: service:wbem:https://xx.xx.xx.xx:5989
    ATTR:
    (template-url-syntax=https://xx.xx.xx.xx:5989),(service-hi-name=
WMI Adapter for Pegasus),(service-hi-description=WMI Adapter for
    Pegasus CIM Server 2.5) ......

This scenario will be added to the IBM Systems Director online
documentation as part of troubleshooting articles.
