IT08365: Process cimprovagt segfault during refresh of Hard Disk Drive partition information on Linux with Platform Agent 6.3.5

APAR status

  • Closed as fixed if next.

Error description

  • The IBM Systems Director Platform Agent (PA) on Linux x86_64
    platform (both on ISD server and on endpoints), may process a
    refresh of Hard Disk Drive (HDD) partition information, when no
     change of HDD/partition information has been made. At times,
    this can cause a memory access error and result in a segfault
    and core dump in the cimprovagt process, followed by a crash

    Impact:
    The customer may see segfault records in Linux system log
    (/var/log/messages).

Local fix

  • There is no usage change that will avoid this issue.

Problem summary

  • The unexpected refresh is causes by improper processing of the
    redirection. When we try to read the redirection target file,
    the updating of this file may not be finished yet. As a result,
    the program defected change of the output, and started
    refreshing.
    When the issue happened, there will be record of segfault in
    /var/log/messages file.
    And after running
    gdb /opt/ibm/icc/bin/cimprovagt -c <path_to_core_dump_file>,
    and then inputing "where", the call stack will include
    IC::OsHwMI::HDDThreadProcess() and
    IC::OsHwMI::createPartitionNodes(bool).
    Platforms: Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.0 (x86_64)
    Versions: Platform Agent 6.3 to 6.3.7
