IT02453: IBM Systems Director Update Manager will hang on a Windows server, if an ESXi update fails

APAR status

  • Closed as fixed if next.

Error description

  • With IBM Systems Director (ISD) installed on a Windows Operating
System (OS), the Update Manager (UM) will appear to hang, if it
encounters a failure processing an ESXi update. Retries of a
failed command in the first failure data capture (FFDC)
routines, cause the appearance of a hang.

    Impact:
The UM task should complete within 20 minutes of encountering an
error. This issue will casue teh UM task to remain active for up
    to 2 days.

Local fix

  • There is no usage change that will avoid this issue.

Problem summary

  • Despite encountering an error that should fail the UM task
within twenty minutes of task start, the update attempt runs for
the entire two day time out duration. This happens when an ESXi
installation fails. As a result of the failure, UM will copy
FFDC logs from the target ESXi, to ISD using the "scp" command.
Since the "scp" command doesn't work on Windows system, the
failure of the command results in retries. Retries will be
attempted, until the task times out, resulting in a the
appearance of a hang of the installation job.

The job log will contain a 'DNZUPX111I ' message simliar to the
    following:
    May 15, 2014 1:59:54 PM EDT-Level:150-MEID:21589--MSG:
DNZUPX111I Starting to download FFDC log files to IBM Systems
    Director server.

    Platform:
    Windows

    Versions:
    ISD 6.3.2 to 6.3.5

Problem conclusion

Temporary fix

  • The user should delete the job if installation failed.
