Question & Answer
Question
Which commands can be issued to determine device special file names, serial numbers, element numbers, and world-wide names (WWNs) on an AIX host?
Answer
A number of commands can be used to collect tape related information from an AIX host. The following list presents a small, but useful, subset of commands and a brief description of the information returned by each:
lsdev -Cc tape
Collects all special device file names created by successful installation of the IBM Tape device driver. For example:
# lsdev -Cc tape
rmt0 Available 06-01-02 IBM 3580 Ultrium Tape Drive (FCP)
rmt1 Available 06-01-02 IBM 3580 Ultrium Tape Drive (FCP)
smc0 Available 0A-01-02 IBM 3584 Library Medium Changer (FCP)
lscfg -vl rmt*
Collects each drive's serial number as recorded in the special device file. For example:
# lscfg -vl rmt*
rmt0 U0.2-P1-I7/Q1-W50050763004F4B04-L0 IBM 3580 Ultrium Tape Drive (FCP)
Manufacturer................IBM
Machine Type and Model......ULT3580-TD4
Serial Number...............1234567890
Device Specific.(FW)........BBHA
rmt1 U0.2-P1-I7/Q1-W50050763004F4B05-L0 IBM 3580 Ultrium Tape Drive (FCP)
Manufacturer................IBM
Machine Type and Model......ULT3580-TD4
Serial Number...............1234567891
Device Specific.(FW)........BBHA
lsattr -El rmtX
Collects the WWN as recorded in the special device file for the given device (e.g. 'rmt0'). For example:
# lsattr -El rmt0 | grep "ww_name"
ww_name 0x5005076300476407 World Wide Port Name False
tapeutil -f /dev/smc0 devids
Collects each drive's element and serial number as reported by the library device. Note, tapeutil has recently been replaced by the IBM Tape Diagnostic Tool (ITDT), but the options are the same (e.g. itdt -f /dev/IBMchanger0 devids). More information about obtaining ITDT can be found here. For example:
# tapeutil -f /dev/smc0 devids
