Error description

  • When the device that syscons points to as the console
    does
not exist upon boot up, cfgcon never sets the login path
(also called the default path) in the console driver.
    This
results in lscons -d returning "NULL".

When init then starts getty on /dev/console, "NULL" is
    put
into the utmp ut_line field. When the situation is
    finally
resolved and the console is set up, it is not possible to
get getty to work because of the "NULL" in the utmp file.

This change will cause the entry with "NULL" to get
    reused
properly when the console is finally set up correctly.

Local fix

  • Doing: cp /dev/null /etc/utmp

will reset utmp back to being empty. When getty
    respawns,
it will be able to find and fill out the utmp entry
    properly -- this is after
