ANS4152E error message when issuing a backup vm command

Problem

ANS4152E Failure initializing VMware virtual machine environment. RC=-303 error message is observed from an attempt to backup a virtual machine

Symptom

An attempt to backup a virtual machine results in an ANS4152E error message:

tsm> backup vm vsys99
ANS4152E Failure initializing VMware virtual machine environment. RC=-303. Refer to client
dsmerror.log for detailed error messages.

ANS1403E Error loading a required Library: vixDiskLib.dll, Win32 rc=126 DLL ANS4152E Failure initializing VMware virtual machine environment. RC=-303. Refer to client dsmerror.log for detailed error messages.

Cause

The Tivoli Storage Manager client VMware backup tool is not installed.

Diagnosing The Problem

One or both of the errors below are logged to the client error log (dsmerror.log by default).

ANS1403E Error loading a required Library: vixDiskLib.dll, Win32 rc=126 DLL ANS4152E Failure initializing VMware virtual machine environment. RC=-303. Refer to client dsmerror.log for detailed error messages.

Resolving The Problem

The Tivoli Storage Manager client VMware backup tools must be installed. During the installation of the Tivoli Storage Manager Client 7.1 or greater, choose a custom install when prompted.

Choosing Custom takes you to the Custom Setup window. From this window, select the following optional item:

VMware vStorage API runtime files
