Question & Answer
Question
What options do I have to effectively filter my data wtihin Cognos Insight?
Cause
When data is initially imported to Cognos Insight from any data source, all content will be displayed. As this may not be the desired content, you have various options and combinations to filter the data using Explore Points or Explore Panes within the workspace.
Answer
The following steps are defined based on the assumption that there is data imported into the Cognos Insight workspace.
Explore Points
When you select a member in one Explore Point, members in other dimensions that are associated to that member are highlighted while members that are not associated to it are not highlighted.
To use Explore Points:
- Identify the widget you wish to filter, and click the restore this widget icon in the upper right of the workspace (small box with downward facing arrow). This will display the white space behind the widget as usable workspace.
- Add the filter using one of the following options:
- Drag the dimension from the top of the widget to the workspace.
- Drag the dimension from with the Data Pane hierarchy to the workspace. If the Data Pane is not displayed, click the Open Content arrow along the right side of the workspace.
- With the dimension frame available on the workspace, you can select a value. When a value is selected, all other widgets or Explore Points on the workspace will filter and refresh based on the value you selected.
- If you no longer need an Explore Point on the workspace, click the folder icon in the top left of that pane and select Remove from Workspace.
Tip: To clear any selections in a dimension or measure, click the filter icon in the top right of the pane.
When in Explore Point mode, you have the ability to expand dimensions included on the workspace to display the hierarchy. The dimension must include a hierarchy in the data item for the menu option to be displayed.
To add a dimension with its hierarchy:
- Drag the dimension into the workspace.
- Right-click the dimension in the Explore Pane, and click Show Hierarchy. All hierarchies in the pane will be expanded.
Explore Panes
You can view Explore Points for all dimensions and measures without dragging them onto the canvas.
To add Explore Points for all dimensions and measures:
- From the Explore menu, click View Explore Pane. A new pane will appear as a frame along the left side of the workspace, displaying all measures and dimensions.
- Select items to display them in the workspace widget.
Tip: To clear any selections, click the filter icon in the top right of the pane.
Search Data in Pane
Using either of these filter methods, the content in a pane can be searched.
To search a pane:
- Click the search icon (magnifying glass) in the top right of either pane. A text box will appear.
- In the text box, type a character string to perform the desired search.
