Question & Answer
Question
How do I run a sosreport in a RHEL 5 and later system?
Answer
This document will explain how to install and run sosreport on a RedHat Version 5 and later system. If you are running a version of RHEL 4 or earlier, see below, How do I run a sysreport in a RHEL 4 and earlier system? for information on the sysreport utility.
Sosreport is a system utility that replaced the sysreport utility. According to the Red Hat documentation:
The sosreport command is a tool that collects information about a Red Hat Enterprise Linux system, such as which kernel is running, what drivers are loaded, and various configuration files for common services. It also does some simple diagnostics against known problematic patterns.
1. Install the RedHat RPM file listed below, depending on your version. You can find the file on the RedHat site or on the RedHat Version 5 installation CDs we provide to customers.
| RedHat version | File name |
| 5.2 | sos-1.7-9.2.el5.noarch.rpm |
| 5.3 | sos-1.7-9.16.el5-6.noarch.rpm |
2. To install the RPM, execute the following as the root user:
- rpm -ivh sos-1.7-9.2.el5.noarch.rpm
3. Once the package has been installed, you can run the sosreport utility as the root user:
- sosreport
The utility generates a file in the /tmp directory, with a name similar to /tmp/sosreport-mhsu.170188-949237-8792e4.tar.bz2.
