APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • VSMGUARD crashes under time of heavy utilization. Recycling
    VSMGUARD results in bringing SMAPI down and requiring a recycle
    of the entire OpenStack compute node.

Local fix

  • Restarting VSMGUARD recovers the system from the abend.

    Several different abends can happen when running on a system
    using SMAPI, which will prevail until SMAPI is restarted.

Problem conclusion

  • The zhcp code and zthin-parts code will now attempt a SMAPI
    Response Recovery when the call to SMAPI returned a request ID;
    yet the next socket read failed with a connection problem
    (timeout, not connected, or refused). If the Response Recovery
    call then fails to find any socket data on the SMAPI queues,
    the call will fail. If the Response Recovery returns with RC 4,
    RS 4, or a connection problem, the Response Recovery will be
    retried a few additional times.
