Error description
When using the z/OS USS shell utility tar to create an archive file including file(s) which exceed the maximum size tar accepts (8GB-1) message FSUMF338 should be issued and the file should not be included in the archive file. This message may not always be issued allowing files exceeding the maximum size to be added to the archive. When trying to extract these files, the following condition occurs: tar: checksum error on tape Verification steps: 1) Verify the z/OS USS utility 'tar' is in use 2) Verify an input file exceeds the 8GB-1 file size limit 3) When trying to extract the above checksum message is issued.
Local fix
Use the 'pax' utility and pax file format (-x pax) to archive files larger than 8GB. For example: Creation: pax -x pax -wvf filename.pax inputfiles List: pax -x pax -vf filename.pax Extraction: pax -x pax -rvf filename.pax

After applying this PTF, z/OS pax, tar and cpio utilities will check all file sizes recursively when packing a directory in tar or cpio format.
