Error description

  • MsgIRA205I may be issued, or an auxiliary storage shortage
detected, when in fact there are plenty of available slots on
    the local page data sets.
When high virtual shared pages are paged out to auxiliary, the
slot counts in ASMNVSC and RASP's ASSBNVSC are incremented.
During DETACH AFFINITY=SYSTEM for a high virtual memory object
which has such paged-out pages, these slots must be freed.
However, when IAXVD calls ILRFRSLS to free them, it passes a
zero ASCB address, which causes ILRFRSLS to NOT decrement either
ASMNVSC or ASSBNVSC. Since ASMNVSC is used to determine total
aux storage usage, it will therefore have an incorrectly high
value. It is possible for this value to get high enough that
msgIRA205I may be issued, or even cause an auxiliary storage
    shortage to be detected.

    ANALYSIS:
    IAXVD

    VERIFICATION STEPS:
D ASM shows local page data sets have low utilization, yet total
utilization is high. ASMNVSC is greater than the total number
of slots in use in all local page data sets.

When high virtual shared pages are paged out to auxiliary, the
slot counts in ASMNVSC and RASP's ASSBNVSC are incremented.
During DETACH AFFINITY=SYSTEM for a high virtual memory object
which has such paged-out pages, these slots must be freed.
Detach code fails to decrement these counts. Since ASMNVSC is
used to determine total aux storage usage, the count may get
high enough that msgIRA205I is issued, or an auxiliary storage
    shortage detected.

Problem conclusion

  • The code in IAXVD which handles Detach of high virtual shared
pages and high virtual common storage which has some paged-out
pages to AUX storage (DASD or SCM), is corrected to correctly
decrement the ASMNVSC and RASP's ASSBNVSC counts.
