Error description

  • At z/OS 2.3, RSM processing during SVCDUMP capture changed that
causes an excessive amount of RPB Pools to be obtained in
Subpool 245 Key 0 ESQA/SQA storage. These pools are x'2000'
bytes each. These areas are obtained because the system wants
to avoid paging other user's storage to auxiliary storage when a
dump depletes real frames. The system pages out storage from
the dump processing instead. If the system's real storage is not
constrained, this processing does not occur and the RPBs are not
    obtained.

In the case where this was diagnosed there were several thousand
RPB Pools obtained in less then a second. LPARs that have high
utilization of common storage may see Abend878, Abend80A, or
other storage abends indicating common storage exhaustion.
Usage of the RPB POOLs is temporary and are eventually freed in
several 10 minute intervals after the RPBs are no longer in use.

    ADDITIONAL SYMPTOMS:
If ESQA/SQA is depleted or Expansion increases:

IRA103I SQA/ESQA HAS EXPANDED INTO CSA/ECSA BY xxxx PAGES

may be seen or xxxx Pages increases significantly

Local fix

  • BYPASS/CIRCUMVENTION:
Increasing ESQA or ECSA size to accomdate the spike in RPBs
Increasing Real storage such that svc dumps do not cause real
    storage constraint.

    ****************************************************************
SVC dump processing was running during a real storage shortage.
Dump processing called a real storage management service to
steal pages it no longer needed. This steal processing did not
correctly count the number of pages stolen for the request,
resulting in a large number of RPB control blocks being obtained
in ESQA/SQA causing a shortage in subpool 245.

Problem conclusion

  • Real storage management processing service for stealing pages
from the address space is changed to properly steal the
    requested number.
