Error description

  • Following a hardware failure, IOS attempts to perform a sense ID
I/O as part of channel path recovery. This I/O may continously
receive start pendings, preventing other I/Os from being started
to the device. This may result in contention for the LPEP and
    VARYDEV resources.

    ANALYSIS:
Daughter tasks hang in IECVDPTH waiting for I/O to complete for
    a SENSE ID ccw.

Local fix

  • 1) Check syslog for repeated - repetative
IOS071I Start Pending messages , ie.
       IEF196I IOS071I 7584,**,*MASTER*, START PENDING
       IOS071I 7584,**,*MASTER*, START PENDING 439
    2) Vary these devices OFFLINE FORCE, ie.
       VARY xxxx,OFFLINE,FORCE
     --------------OR----------------------------------
    1) Use the D GRS,C command to display the owner TCB for SYSIEFSD
VARYDEV resource owner. TCB:006FC920, Jobname IOSAS.
    2) Use the Force TCB command:
    FORCE IOSAS,TCB=6FC920
NOTE: only use 6 digits for the TCB address leading 00.. are not
    used.
If more than one VARY was issued this command may be necessary
for each TCB involved in the VARY

    * RECOMMENDATION:                                              *
    ****************************************************************
As a result of a hardware failure, continual start pending
    conditions (MSGIOS071I) may occur on self-description I/O
started as part of channel path recovery. Additionally
contention on resources such as SYSIEFSD.VARYDEV and
    SYSZIOS.LPEP may occur.

Problem conclusion

  • Change self description processing for active recovery I/O
to reduce the MIH time and not retry for a start pending
    condition.
