Error description

  • The zOS DFS/SMB server DFSKERN does not support Windows 10
It also does not support ANY Microsoft / CIFS / SMB Protocol
    other than SMBv1

The newer SMBv2 and SMBv3 etc. are not supported.
There are also no plans to provide this support in the future.

In addition, a clarification of the existing DFS/SMB
    documentation in SC23-6886-01 z/OS V2R2 Distributed File
Service SMB Administration in section 'About this
document' where it is stated as follows:

"Distributed File Service includes an SMB function that is based
on the X/Open SMB Version 2 specification and the IETF RFCs on
NetBIOS over IP (RFC1001 and RFC1002)"

This statement is NOT referring to the above restictions on the
newer Microsoft / CIFS SMBvX protocols.

    SMBV2
    SMBV3
    WIN10

Local fix

  • Do not use Windows 10
Only use the SMBv1 protocol on supported Windows clients

    * RECOMMENDATION: UPDATE DOCUMENTATION                         *
    ****************************************************************
This documentation APAR is being provided to identify that
the Windows 10 SMB client is not supported and to clarify a
section in the Distributed File Service Administration
    (SC23-6886-30) document.

Problem conclusion

  • The zOS DFS/SMB server DFSKERN does not provide support or use
for Microsoft Windows 10 clients. Support is only provided to
the clients listed in the z/OS Distributed File Service SMB
Administration document SC23-6886-30 allowing SMBv1 protocol
traffic. SMB traffic for protocols later than SMBv1 will not
    be accepted.

The second paragraph in the "About this document" section is
    being replaced with the following:

Distributed File Service includes an SMB function that is based
on the X/Open SMB Version 2 specification and the IETF RFCs on
NetBIOS over IP (RFC1001 and RFC1002).. The Version 2
specification refers to the publication level and does not
imply support of the SMBv2 protocol or later.
