APAR Error Description / Circumvention

-------------------------------------------------
Intermittent network install problem.  Procedure does not
complete

CORRECTION FOR APAR 'MA42116' :
-------------------------------
After the PTF has been applied, the firmware can be downloaded
to the adapter when the lines are active or inactive including
a system with Operations Console on a Network LAN.

The new firmware will not be activated until the I/O slot or
system is power cycled:
- PWRDWNSYS with restart(*no)
--OR--
- DLPAR - remove then add back providing the resource is
desired, not required. (See note.)
--OR--
- Concurrent maintenance to power off/on the slot
(See note.)
--OR--
When not managed by a HMC, PWRDWNSYS with restart(*no).
When HMC managed, the server must be powered off, then
powered on.

NOTE: When the 576F is installed in one of the following
systems: M/T8202, M/T8205, and M/T8231, the system must
be powered off then powered on.

Once the new firmware is activated, running either
"displaylanfirmwareversion" or "updatelanfirmware" will show the
updated version number of the adapter. Prior to the slot power
cycle, the adapter version number will show the previous adapter
version.

The 1004 level of firmware includes the V5.0.1 (or 0150) version
of Fcode and the V1.24 level of boot code.

The following procedure is required to update the firmware for
the PCIe 4-Port LAN adapter, CCIN 576F:

1. From an IBM i command line:
- Go Hardware . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . press enter
- Option 1 Work with communication resources . . press enter
- or WRKHDWRSC *CMN . . . . . . . . . . . . . . press enter
to identify how many 576F Comm adapters are in the partition
Record the first CMNxx resource for each adapter
In this example, it is CMN23.
Resource Type Status Text
CMB14 576F Operational Comm Processor
LIN11 576F Operational LAN Adapter
CMN23 576F Operational Ethernet Port
CMN24 576F Operational Ethernet Port
CMN25 576F Operational Ethernet Port
CMN26 576F Operational Ethernet Port

2. F12 back to command line

3. Start a service tool (STRSST) . . . . . . . . . press enter

4. Take option 1, Start a service tool . . . . . . press enter

5. Take option 4, Display/alter/dump . . . . . . . press enter

6. Take option 1, Display/alter storage . . . . . . press enter

7. Take option 2, Licensed Internal Code data . . . press enter

8. Page down
Take option 14, Advanced analysis . . . . . . . press enter

9. To display the current firmware, go to step 10.
To update the firmware, go to step 14.

10. Option Command
1 displaylanfirmwareversion . . . . . . press enter

11. Command . . . . : DISPLAYLANFIRMWAREVERSION
Options . . . . . CMN23 . . . . . . . . . . . press enter

Example of current firmware screen

DISPLAY/ALTER/DUMP
Running macro: DISPLAYLANFIRMWAREVERSION CMN23

Adapter NVRAM Firmware Data:
Version: 1003
Additional User Block Data:
0000000000000000
00000000

System NVRAM Firmware Data:
Version: 1004
Additional User Block Data:
0000000000000000
00000000

Example of current firmware (paged down)

Adapter NVRAM Firmware Data:
Version: 1003
Additional User Block Data:
0000000000000000

System NVRAM Firmware Data:
Version: 1004
Additional User Block Data:
0000000000000000
00000000

Refer to the PTF description(s) for mapping these values to
Fcode and Boot code levels.

14. Example to updatelanfirmware
Option Command
1 updatelanfirmware . . . . . . . . . . press enter

15. Example, to updatelanfirmware resource CMN23

Command . . . . : updatelanfirmware
Options . . . . . CMN23 . . . . . . . . . . . press enter

16. This procedure usually takes about 15-20 seconds, and
can be done with the adapter varied on or varied off or
if LAN Console, while using the Console.

17. If there are other 576F LAN adapters on the partition
follow the same procedure using the appropriate (CMNxx)
resource name to update them.

18. The next screen will indicate if the download of
version 1004 was successful.

NOTE: The new adapter firmware version will not be displayed
until the firmware is activated by the next step.

DISPLAY/ALTER/DUMP
Running macro: UPDATELANFIRMWARE CMN23

Adapter NVRAM Firmware Data:
Version: 1003
Additional User Block Data:
0000000000000000
00000000

System NVRAM Firmware Data:
Version: 1004
Additional User Block Data:
0000000000000000
00000000

Adapter Firmware successfully updated to System Version.

The firmware will be used the next time the slot is power
cycled. This can be manual done by powering off and on the
slot from the Hardware Service Manager.

19. Caution:
This firmware will not be activated until the I/O slot
for the LAN adapter has been power cycled, which can be
accomplished by one of the following methods:

- PWRDWNSYS with restart(*no)
--OR--
- DLPAR - remove then add back providing the resource is
desired, not required. (See note.)
--OR--
- Concurrent maintenance to power off/on the slot
(See note.)
--OR--
When not managed by an HMC, PWRDWNSYS with restart(*no).
When HMC managed, the server must be powered off, then
powered on.

NOTE: When the 576F is installed in one of the following
systems: M/T8202, M/T8205, and M/T8231, the system must
be powered off then powered on.

20. The following procedure verifies the updated version number
of the adapter after the power cycle of the adapter:

21. From an IBM i command line:
Start a service tool (STRSST) . . . . . . . . . press enter

22. Take option 1, Start a service tool . . . . . . press enter

23. Take option 4, Display/alter/dump . . . . . . . press enter

24. Take option 1, Display/alter storage . . . . . . press enter

25. Take option 2, Licensed Internal Code data . . . press enter

26. Page down
Take option 14, Advanced analysis

27. Option Command
1 displaylanfirmwareversion . . . . . . press enter

28. In this example, CMN23 is the first LAN adapter resource
Command . . . . : DISPLAYLANFIRMWAREVERSION
Options . . . . . CMN23 . . . . . . . . . . . press enter

29. Adapter firmware level is now the same as system firmware
level. Also "updatelanfirmware" would cause the 1004 to be
written down to the adapter (again) and would show the same
1004 levels for both adapter and system.

Adapter NVRAM Firmware Data:
Version: 1004
Additional User Block Data:
0000000000000000
00000000

System NVRAM Firmware Data:
Version: 1004
Additional User Block Data:
0000000000000000
00000000

Procedure to upgrade the FC #5899 and FC #5260 CCIN 576F LAN
adapter firmware for IBM i complete.
