How to enable tracing for Information Services Director

Question & Answer

Question

How can you enable tracing for the internal operations of Information Services Director, and then view and export the recorded data?

Answer

Information Server can capture event level tracing for Information Services Director. This tracing is enabled within the Information Server Web Console. The web console is accessed with your web browser. There are two main functional areas for which tracing should be enabled, the ISF Agent and the DataStage Handler. In most situations, tracing for both areas should be enabled at the same time.

Note: once these Logging Configurations have been created, they can be activated and deactivated as needed without redoing all of the steps.

Create and Activate an ISF Agent Logging Configuration:

  1. Log into the Information Server Web Console.
  2. Go to the Administration tab.
  3. Click on Log Management.
  4. Click on Logging Components.
  5. Click the radio button to the left of ISF Agent, then click on Manage Configurations.

If there is an existing ISFAgent.TRACE configuration that you previously created with these instructions, then select it and click on Set as Active. Otherwise, continue with the following steps to create a new Logging Configuration.

  6. Click on New Logging Configuration.
  7. Set the name to ISFAgent.TRACE
  8. Change Threshold to All
  9. Click Browse, and select ISF-AGENT, ISF-AGENT-APP and ISF-AGENT-HANDLER, then click Ok.
  10. Change the severity level to All.
  11. Click Save and Close.
  12. Click Set as Active.

Create and Activate a DataStage Handler Logging Configuration:
  1. Log into the Information Server Web Console.
  2. Go to the Administration tab
  3. Click on Log Management
  4. Click on Logging Components
  5. Click the radio button to the left of WISD, then click on Manage Configurations.
(Note: in later releases the logging component to select is called "ISD" instead of "WISD").

If there is an existing WISD.TRACE configuration that you previously created with these instructions, then select it and click on Set as Active. Otherwise, continue with the following steps to create a new Logging Configuration.

  6. Click on New Logging Configuration.
  7. Set the name to WISD.TRACE
  8. Change Threshold to All
  9. Click Browse and select WISD-HANDLER-DS, then click Ok.
  10. Change the severity level to All.
  11. Click Save and Close
  12. Click Set as Active.

Access the tracing information by creating a Log View
  1. Log into the Information Server Web Console.
  2. Go to the Administration tab
  3. Click on Log Management
  4. Click on Log Views
  5. Click on New Log View
  6. Set the name to "ISF Agent and WISD Tracing"
  7. Within the Severity Levels section, select "All".
  8. Within the Categories section, press the Browse button.
  9. Check the boxes for WISD-HANDLER-DS, ISF-AGENT, ISF-AGENT-APP, ISF-AGENT-HANDLER, and then press Ok button.
  10. Within the Timestamp section, use the options available to choose a desired timeframe for logging events that will be included in the view. You should limit the criteria as much as possible so that the log view will operate quickly. If you are able to reproduce a problem at will, then a good choice is the Interval method, for the last 30 minutes.
  11. Leave the Context Items section blank (default).
  12. Within the Table Columns section, check all of the boxes.
  13. Press Save and Close button to finish.

At this point, you should perform the tests or tasks within Information Services Director for which you need to capture tracing information. Once these tasks are completed, you can view the log and export it to a file with the following steps.

Viewing and Exporting Log Information
  1. Log into the Information Server Web Console.
  2. Go to the Administration tab
  3. Click on Log Management
  4. Click on Log Views
  5. Select the box next to "ISF Agent and WISD Tracing", then click View Log
  6. You can now scroll and page through the log information.
  7. Press the Export Log button to save the data to a file. The log format is limited to plain text format. Your web browser should open a dialog box asking you where to save the text file.

Once the necessary information has been exported to a file, and the tests are completed, you should disable the tracing so that it does not continue to consume space in the repository.

Disabling the tracing
  1. Log into the Information Server Web Console.
  2. Go to the Administration tab
  3. Click on Log Management
  4. Click on Logging Components
  5. Select the radio button to the left of ISF Agent, then click Manage Configurations
  6. Check the box next to ISFAgent.WARN and then click Set As Active.
  7. Click the small button with an "X" on it, above "New Logging Configuration" link.
  8. Select the radio button to the left of WISD, then click Manage Configurations
  9. Check the box next to WISD.WARN, and then click Set As Active
