Unclear Documentation on Rational Agent Controller version and support for J2SE-JVM 1.x (JVMPI and/or JVMTI) and 32-bit/64-bit editions

Troubleshooting

Problem

Attempts to profile a 32 bit IBM WebSphere Application Server application using JRE 1.4 on an AIX 64 bit POWER PC platform results in failure because the wrong version of Rational Agent Controller was installed due to unclear documentation.

Symptom

Attempts to profile a WebSphere application on 32 bit WebSphere Application Server with JRE 1.4 on AIX 64-bit platform from Rational Application Developer for WebSphere Software results in failures with Rational Agent Controller.

  • Rational Agent Controller 8.2.2 was installed on AIX 64 bit by following the installation instructions for a 64 bit version of AIX located in the download document IBM Rational Agent Controller, Version 8.2.2.
  • WebSphere Application Server v6.0.2.x JVM: -XrunpiAgent:server=enabled (as appropriate for JVM 1.4 or lower)
  • LIBPATH environment variable was set to point to the <rac_install>/lib directory (where <rac_install> is /opt/IBM/SDP/AgentController.)
  • Start-up of WebSphere Application Server 6.0 with the above environment variables set, resulted in the following error:

    No java stack
JVMCI158: Can't load "libpiAgent.a", because load ENOENT on shared
    library(s)
    JVMCI098: xmloadJVMHelperLib piAgent server=enabled, failed
Could not create the Java virtual machine.
