Troubleshooting


Problem

Collecting data for problems with the IBM Application Migration Toolkit. Gathering this information before calling IBM support will help familiarize you with the troubleshooting process and save you time.

Resolving The Problem

Provide as much information as possible to help analysts to understand the issue and to analyze the symptoms and exceptions.
<workspace>/.metadata/.plugins/com.ibm.ws.appconversion.base
This directory can be found in the current workspace by choosing File > Switch workspace menu item. The current workspace is displayed in the dialog.
For the Migration Toolkit for Application Binaries (Binary Scanner):
  • Describe the problem you are seeing and what the symptoms are.
  • Describe the steps used to recreate the problem.
  • Provide the following information:
    • The command used to run the binary scanner.
    • The console output.
    • Any generated migration report if a report was generated.
    • The trace log file generated during the scan. 
                  To generate a trace log, specify the --debug="*=all" as a parameter in your command
                  (example:  java -jar binaryAppScanner.jar C:\App.ear --debug="*=all"). 
                  Note:  The trace log is generated where the binary scanner is installed which can be a different location than where the reports are located.
For the WebSphere Application Server Migration Toolkit (Source Scanner):
Describe the problem you are seeing and what the symptoms are.
Describe the steps used to recreate the problem.
Provide a screen shot or description of the rules that are enabled if the problem is
scan-related.
Any specific information on which rule or Quick Fix was being run.
Provide all contents of the application migration service logs found in the
following directory:
  • Describe the problem you are seeing and what the symptoms are.
  • Describe the steps used to recreate the problem.
  • Provide a screen shot or description of the rules that are enabled if the problem is scan-related.
  • Any specific information on which rule or Quick Fix was being run.
  • Provide all contents of the application migration service logs found in the following directory:
                    <workspace>/.metadata/.plugins/com.ibm.ws.appconversion.base
                   
                     This directory can be found in the current workspace by choosing File > Switch Workspace menu item.
                     The current workspace is displayed in the dialog.
  • Provide the workspace log (<workspace>/.metadata/.log) which contains Eclipse and RSAR logs.
  • If possible, send a code sample, deployment descriptor or a zip of the project you are trying to scan.
  • .project and .classpath files of the project encountering the problem.
                  This will help determine the project nature and the build classpath.
                  (<workspace>/<project name>/.classpath and <workspace>/<project name>/.project)
             
  • Analysis history XML file – Saved from the results tab.  You must preform a separate save for each results type.
  • A list of the Eclipse plug-ins installed:
          1.  Go to Help > About Eclipse. Click Installation Details.
          2.  Click on the Configuration tab.
          3.  Click the Copy to Clipboard button.
          4.  Paste the information to a document to send to Support.

Enable trace by setting the appconversion.trace system variable. Use 1 of the following options:
  • Command line option. Add the following system variable to the command line that starts Eclipse:
               eclipse.exe -vmargs -Dappconversion.trace=true
  • eclipse.ini option.  Add the following line to the eclipse.ini file found in the same directory as the eclipse.exe file:
               -Dappconversion.trace=true
