Must Gather data for AIX I/O Device Drivers + MPIO (AIXIOD) issues

How To

Summary

This document explains the minimum required data when opening a new case with AIX I/O Device Drivers / MPIO Support team. That includes AIX issues related to SAN/path issues, error log analysis for disk errors, issues configuring disks, etc.

Objective

The objective of this document is to advise customers the minimum data collection requirements for AIX I/O Device Driver, AIX SAN/path disk issues, MPIO issues, etc.

Environment

All AIX levels
All VIOS levels

Steps

Devscan
Download the devscan tool here:
Install the devscan tool on the VIO server and/or the AIX LPAR or host, following the instructions found in the devscan tool homepage.
On a VIO server, run the devscan tool from oem_setup_env.  On an AIX host or LPAR, simply run it from your normal shell prompt:
# devscan -Fc7 > /tmp/<case number>.devscan.out
  • NOTE:  Replace <case number> with your AIX or VIOS case number for this issue.
Snap Collection
Collect snap data as follows:
If issues are present on a Virtual I/O Server (VIOS), or if the AIX LPAR having issues is a Virtual I/O Client, then it will be necessary to collect a padmin snap of the VIOS in the environment.
On a VIO server, login as padmin and run the default snap from the padmin prompt, with no flags:
$ snap
On an AIX LPAR, collect snap data as root user with the following flags:
# snap -r (removes previous snap data)
# snap -aZc
If your AIX LPAR has collected a dump that is involved with your issue, then run without the -Z flag:
# snap -r (removes previous snap data)
# snap -ac
