Intermittently, values go to zero (or see '#value' and '#n/a') when running (F9) Excel link spreadsheet, caused by defect APAR PH02227

Troubleshooting


Problem

Inside the main 'classic' Controller client, user clicks "Reports - Run". User runs a report, choosing the 'report conversion' to be 'Cognos Controller link for Microsoft Excel'.
  
Under certain circumstances, the report does not always work correctly, for example:
  • fGetVal formulae's values all go to zero
  • Depending on the spreadsheet, some fGetVal cells may also say (instead of zero):
    • #value
    • or #n/a
  • Also, other formulae (for example =cc.fAccName()) may not contshow the correct name
    • For example, instead of showing something like 'Sales income', instead a message 'The account code is invalid' is displayed.
The problem may appear intermittent (you may need to run the report several times before the problem occurs).

Symptom

Example #1
1. Inside the 'main' Controller client, click "Reports - Run"
2. Choose any report, and delect the required parameters
3. Make sure that 'Cognos Controller link for Microsoft Excel' is selected:

4. Click 'Send to Application'
  • Notice how everything works OK (all the values of the cells look OK)
5. Inside "Run Reports" choose and tun a different report (or the same report), and then press F9
  • Sometimes this will work OK
6. Repeat steps 2-5 several times
  • Eventually the problem will occur.
    
Example #2
1. Perform the same steps 1-3 above
2. Click on the "Print" icon
3. Once Excel has opened, press F9 (to refresh/run the report inside Excel)
4. Notice the result (bad).
