How to collect logs when installing SLES or performing an offline upgrade

How To

Summary

I booted my server from ISO or network to install or upgrade SUSE Linux® Enterprise Server, and something went wrong. How do I collect logs from the wizard?

Objective

To collect support data, which can be sent to IBM for troubleshooting.

Environment

  • SLES
  • x86_64 architecture
Note: Some of the information on this page also applies to other architectures like s390x, ppc64, or ppc64le, but some of it is probably not applicable. In particular, using the Ctrl+Alt+F2 key combination might not work.

Steps

Saving the log file
  1. Press Shift+F8.
  2. Use the interface to save the Yast2 logs.
If the local disk is not yet mounted, then:
  1. Press Ctrl+Alt+F2 to switch to a text console.
  2. Use this command to list the available block devices:
    lsblk
  3. From the block devices, identify a suitable file system on the local disk. You might need to mount one or more of the devices and list the content.
  4. Mount your chosen device, for example:
    mount /dev/sda2 /mnt
  5. Next, you can choose one of these methods to save the logs:
    1. Press Ctrl+Alt+F7 to switch back to the graphical console, and then use Shift+F8 again.
    2. Use this command:
      /usr/sbin/save_y2logs y2logs.tgz
Transferring the log file to IBM Support
  1. If you can start the network services, you can use SCP or FTP to transfer the logs to a location from which they can be uploaded to IBM.
  2. Alternatively, if the server still boots normally, you can restart it and then transfer the files off the server.
  3. You can upload the file to your IBM Support case here:
