BiLog: Phenomenal Speeds...and V7 Report Comparison

Enabling speeds up to 186,000 miles per second, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) houses the fastest racetrack in the world with protons traveling at 99.99999% the speed of light.
Comparing this to the awe-inspiring space shuttle which blasts into space at 17,500 miles per hour, or 0.48 miles per second – and the race clearly belongs to LHC.
From here, you could compare these magnificent enablers of scientific research in many different ways, including the costs and the time to build, number of scientists employed and range of scientific experiments conducted, and the value of the research they return. And while this comparison would be incredibly fascinating….I’ll instead turn towards a reporting comparison within the Maximo Version 7 releases, which was introduced in 2008 – the same year as the LHC.
Over the last few months, a number of clients have been asking for a comparison of reporting tools within the Maximo Version 7 releases. They have asked for additional details in when BIRT is best used in their environments versus when Cognos reporting may be a better fit. Last week, I had a great opportunity to present this information to a number of clients in a ‘Super Friday Learning Sessions’
The session started with an overview of the reporting products included, plus very importantly - how they were integrated within the Version 7 framework. Then, two components – Operational Reporting and Ad Hoc Reporting – were compared in depth. For Operational reporting, the comparison included key functionality available to the end user, report developer and administrator. For Ad Hoc reporting, the comparison included the functionality available to create the report – and then a comparison of accessing and executing the ad hoc report.
The baseline diagram for the comparison of the tools is shown here. The goal of this comparison is to give you additional details so you can determine the best reporting tool or tools for your unique business environment.
