Question & Answer
Question
Why does IBM Rational Software Architect Designer (RSAD) crash/hang which eventually leads to a core/heap dump, when running RSAD with the "-clean" option after installing the Rational Team Concert (RTC) p2 client?
Cause
The issue is only seen after installing the RTC p2 plugin and running the -clean option with the RSA eclipse launcher.
- The plugin requires more java memory than the default setting for RSAD.
Answer
The core/heap dumps can be prevented, if you increase java memory in your eclipse.ini, before restart.
The values recommended are as follows:
- -Xms1024m
- -Xmx4096m
Steps to apply the above extra java memory:
- Open the eclipse.ini in a text editor. The eclipse.ini is located under your RSAD install folder (e.g. C:\Program Files\IBM\SDP_97_01)
- Add the above parameters (-Xms1024m and -Xmx4096m), just after the "-vmargs" entry in the eclipse.ini:
- Save the file
- Run RSAD with the -clean option now e.g. eclipse.exe -clean
