Understanding of how to stop and start the IBM Identity Manager 7.0.1 Virtual Appliance (Single and Clustering Environment.)

Product Documentation

Abstract

How to stop and start the Virtual Appliance (VA) with IBM Identity Manager (ISIM) properly

Improper stop or start might cause: ( hardstop from hardware, some interruption with no power, or start the virtual appliance but the database/ LDAP instances are not ready.)

1. ISIM users can not login the ISIM admin console and Service Center.
2. Data corruption (if the hardtop, or some power outage.)
3. Virtual appliance might not be able to start up
4. Transaction data will end and never completed.

The VA clustering has extra steps to start and stop.

DB2 improperly shutdown with transaction in flight before the ISIM applications in the transaction.

IBM LDAP stop improper might cause the start up in configuration mode, (some processes are not ready or hung.)

IBM recommendation

Alerts before you stop the ISIM / VA.
  • You might want to inform the users for shutting down the VA server as under "maintenance mode".
  • You should complete all requests like Data Synchronization for the reporting and reconciliation, etc, or cancel the requests, or other processes intensive task should be ended if those requests are hung.
  • Refer the requests in pending and hung ( Please  consult with IBM SME Support)
  • Refer the reconciliation process lock (Please consult with IBM SME Support )
  • Don't stop the Database and LDAP before ISIM application is still running although no requests. DBA /LDAP team should check any activities are still in pending. DB2 improperly shutdown with transaction in flight, data usually recover after the ISIM/VA starts up most of cases however, some cases would not bring back as normal.  Internally, the transaction logs are written in WebSphere, some corruption might occur in the translog. We might need to clean up the WAS translog
  • WAS translog infor  (Please consult with IBM SME Support )

Steps to stop the ISIM /VA
  1. Make sure to stop the ISIM application in the virtual appliance first.
  2. Clustering - Follow the steps here for the Stops the IBM Security Identity Manager server node.
  3. Then, stop the DB2 (database) and Directory Server. ( The VA restart can be done without restart DB/LDAP, make sure to stop the ISIM app from VA first.)
Steps to start the ISIM/VA
  1. Start Dataase/LDAP instances first
  2. Start the VA from CLI
  3. Make sure the ISIM app started in the LMI
Steps to restart the ISIM/VA
  1. Stop the ISIM APP from LMI (make sure above
Alerts before you stop the ISIM / VA.)
