ITM Agent Insights: Defining situations for Agentless Monitoring agents - R2, R3, R4, R5, R6

Body

The Agentless Monitoring agents - R2, R3, R4, R5, R6 - come with a set of predefined situations that are documented in the individual User's Guide manuals under the "Situations reference" section.  These situations are shipped as part of the application support definitions that are installed on the TEMS / TEPS infrastructure.

Customers unfamiliar with the Agentless monitoring agents may report problems finding the "default" predefined situations in the TEP Situation Editor, or report a problem with seeing attribute groups when creating a new situation.  This is the result of customers looking  for existing situation definitions under the "Agentless <platform> OS" navigator items in the TEP Situation Editor navigator tree, or creating a new situation against the "Agentless <platform> OS" application.  The Agentless monitoring agents - R2, R3, R4, R5, R6 - are comprised of both a "framework" application, as well as having an application for the data collection connection type and platform.

  • For AIX / HP-UX / Linux there is only SNMP
  • For Windows there is SNMP and WMI
  • For Solaris there are SMA, SMC, and CIM

Example using the Agentless Linux OS agent.

The Agentless Linux OS agent -  R4 - has no predefined situations under the "Agentless Linux OS" application in situation editor, since there are no "framework" predefined situations.

In the Situation Editor for the "Agentless Linux OS" application:

Notice how there are no situations defined against "Agentless Linux OS" since all the predefined situations are defined against the "SNMP Linux Systems" application.  Expanding "SNMP Linux Systems" in the Situation Editor navigator tree shows the default situations for the R4 agent:

Attempting to create a new situation for attributes that are gathered from the remote systems must be defined against the correct connection application.  Attempting to create a new situation against the "framework" application will ONLY display the "framework" attributes:

In order to create situations for Disk, Memory, etc attributes that are gathered by SNMP data collection from a remote Linux system, create a situation against the "SNMP Linux Systems" application in the Situation Editor:

The need to create a situation against the correct application for the platform / data collection method is similar for all of the Agentless monitoring agents.
