Symptom
When attempting to install a x86-64 guest VM operating system, the installation fails to start as a result of no VMware 64-bit long-mode support for the processors in the system.
Affected configurations
The system may be any of the following IBM servers:
- BladeCenter HS20, type 8678, any model
- BladeCenter HS20, type 8832, any model
- BladeCenter HS20, type 8843, any model
- BladeCenter HS40, type 8839, any model
- xSeries 226, type 8648, any model
- xSeries 235, type 8671, any model
- xSeries 236, type 8841, any model
- xSeries 260, type 8865, any model
- xSeries 346, type 8840, any model
- xSeries 366, type 8863, any model
- xSeries 440, type 8687, any model
- xSeries 460, type 8872, any model
- xSeries MXE-460, type 8874, any model
This tip is not option specific.
The system is configured with at least one of the following:
- VMware ESX Server 3.0, any update
- VMware ESX Server 3.0.1, any update
Note: This does not imply that the network operating system will work under all combinations of hardware and software.

Workaround
- Go to www.VMware.com.
- Click on Downloads at the upper right of the webpage.
- On the next page, scroll down and click on the tab labeledDrivers and Tools.
- Scroll down to CPU Compatibility Tools and choose theversion of VMware running in your environment.
- Create the cpuid tool bootable iso.
- With the CD as the boot device, boot the server and allowthe tool to run.

The tool will run a report:
- If long-mode support = Yes, then the processor issupported with 64-bit guest operating systems.
- If long-mode support = No, then the processor is notsupported with 64-bit guest operating systems.
Additional information
Specific hardware requirements exist for 64-bit guest operating system support.
For AMD Opteron-based systems, the processors must be Opteron Rev E and later. For Intel Xeon-based systems, the processors must include support for Intel Virtualization Technology.
