"No space left on device" when running application on WebSphere Application Server

Troubleshooting

Problem

Unexpected/unstable application/WebSphere behavior caused by underlying exceptions: "java.io.IOException: No space left on device".

Symptom

There isn't any single specific symptom as the failure can happen anywhere in the code,
whatever code happens to be the first trying to write to disk while the disk just became full ...
This can happen when the JVM executes application code or WebSphere code, e.g. a common functionality that writes to disk is logging but obviously there are many other activities that write to disk.
