Problem
Attempts to run the IBM Installation Manager results in the error "No java Virtual Machine Was Found in: path to the folder jre_5.0.3.sr8a_20080811b".
Symptom
After running the file launchpad.exe from the downloaded installation file of Rational Software Architect to install the installation manager, the installation ends with success message.
Running the Installation Manager following that, produces the error:
No java Virtual Machine Was Found in: path to the folder jre_5.0.3.sr8a_20080811b
Or, depending on the Installation Manager version, you would see this error:
Cause
This issue was identified as a product defect under APAR PK82974.
Diagnosing The Problem
Check the folder whose path is mentioned in the error (for example, C:\Program Files\IBM\Installation Manager\eclipse) and compare the contents to another computer where the installation works.
You may see that the folder jre_5.0.3.sr8a_20080811b is missing inside the folder that resides on troubled computer.
Resolving The Problem
WORKAROUND:
- Manually create the folder jre_5.0.3.sr8a_20080811b inside the directory mentioned in the error above (for example, C:\Program Files\IBM\Installation Manager\eclipse)
- From another user computer where Installation Manager version 1.2, 1.3 or 1.4 runs successfully, find the folder jre_5.0.3.sr8a_20080811b in the same path in step 1.
- Open the jre_5.0.3.sr8a_20080811b and find the folder JRE inside.
- Add the contents of the JRE folder to a zip archive and send it to the user with the problem.
- Unzip the archive into the folder jre_5.0.3.sr8a_20080811b that you created manually in step 1.
IBM Installation Manager will now run without errors.
