NIP CONSOLES ON HMC

Question & Answer

Question

We have a Z114. Is it possible to use the HMC as a NIP console , and if so can you direct me how I might do that ? We have always used OSA cards , but I recently had an issue where they PC's that had the 3270 cards were not set up correctly at our DR site, and wondered if I could have taken some measures to IPL from the HMC and use it as a NIP console. How about if I'm caught w/o consoles , but I defined them , if I just vary the chpid off for the nip consoles , I assume it will use the HMC?

Answer

The system (HMC based) console is ALWAYS available as the last resort for an IPL/NIP console.

There is no need in any special definition: just make sure that the IPLing system does not have access to 3270 NIPCONs defined in the Operating System configuration in the IODF, used for IPL.

If you wish to use the system console as the only NIP console, do NOT define 3270 NIPCONs at all.

What you are suggesting is the right step: with TN3270 emulators on workstations, connected to the host via OSC channel paths, configuring those paths offline from HMC prior to IPL will guarantee that the IPLing system won't be duped by a misleading ONLINE status, presented by the network hardware, and will choose the system (HMC-based) console as its NIP console.
