NFS Version 4 - System i Client Requires NFS BIO Server Daemon

Troubleshooting

Problem

This document provides information about System i NFS client running 6.1 or greater requiring the NFS BIO daemon.

Resolving The Problem

The IBM System i Network File System (NFS) application was enhanced at Release 6.1 to use NFS Version 4 using TCP/IP.
Important Note: This enhancement requires the current NFS PTFs.

When the System i functions as a NFS client and NFS version 4 is required, the System i requires the NFS BIO and RGY server daemons to be running. This is different than previous releases of System i NFS client where no server daemons were required. If the NFS BIO and/or RGY daemon is inactive, it can be started using the following command:

STRNFSSVR SERVER(*BIO)
STRNFSSVR SERVER(*RGY)

If the BIO daemon is not active, and the MOUNT command is run, it will fail with any of the following errors:

CPFA0E3 - The requested operation could not be completed.
CPFA0A2 - Information passed to this operation was not valid.
CPFA0AA - Error occurred while attempting to obtain space
CPFA0D4 - File system error occurred. Error number 3438
