NFS read (rsize) and write (wsize) limit

Question & Answer

Question

What is the default rsize and wsize for NFS mounts and what is the limit

Cause

Extending the NFS RPC size

Answer

The default and maximum value for rsize and wsize can be different depending on the level of AIX.

AIX 5.3:

rsize=n
Sets the read buffer size to n bytes. The default value is 8192. For AIX 4.2.1 and later, the default value is 32768 when using Version 3 of the NFS protocol. For AIX 5.3 and later, the default value is 32768 when using Version 4 of the NFS protocol.
wsize=n
Sets the write buffer size to n bytes. The default value is 8192. For AIX 4.2.1 and later, the default value is 32768 when using Version 3 of the NFS protocol. For AIX 5.3 and later, the default value is 32768 when using Version 4 of the NFS protocol.

AIX 6.1 and 7.1:
wsize=n
Sets the write buffer size to n bytes. Beginning with AIX Version 6.1, the default value is 64 KB and the maximum value is 512 KB when using Version 3 and Version 4 of the NFS protocol.

rsize=n
Sets the read buffer size to n bytes. Beginning with AIX Version 6.1, the default value is 64 KB and the maximum value is 512 KB when using Version 3 and Version 4 of the NFS protocol.

NOTE:
To extend the rsize and wsize to 512 KB in AIX 6.1 and 7.1 you must have the following APAR installed for the version of AIX in question:
6100-08 - use AIX APAR IV24594
7100-02 - use AIX APAR IV24688
If AIX 6.1 and 7.1 doesn't have the appropriate APAR installed the max rsize and wsize will be limited to 64 KB.
