Abstract

This matrix contains alerts, news, and documentation for the NFS Plug-in for VMware vStorage VAAI 1.0.21 release used with IBM® System Storage™ N series storage systems.

ATTENTION:
  • The following new features is supported with the plug-in:
    • IPv6 in clustered Data ONTAP 8.2.1 or later, and Data ONTAP 8.1.1 or later operating in the 7-Mode storage system.
  • The IBM N series NFS Plug-in for VMware vStorage APIs for Array Integration (VAAI) is supported on clustered Data ONTAP® 8.1 or later, and Data ONTAP® 8.1.1 or later operation in 7-Mode.
  • The plug-in runs on the ESXi host and takes advantage of enhanced storage features offered by VMware vSphere 5.0. On the IBM N series storage system, the NFSv3 Storage feature must be enabled for the ESXi host to take advantage of VMware VAAI.
  • The plug-in performs NFS-like remote procedure calls (RPCs) to the server, using the same credentials as that of an ESXi NFS client. This means that the plug-in requires no additional credentials and has the same access rights as the ESXi NFS client.
  • The NFS vStorage feature must be ON for the ESXi host to use VMware's VAAI.
  • The plug-in includes the following features:
    • Copy Offload

      • This process that previously took a few minutes now takes seconds and helps to reduce the traffic on the ESXi host and lower the amount of CPU utilization needed to perform this function.
    • Space Reservation

      • This feature enables creation of thick virtual disk files on NAS. Through the VAAI Reserve Space primitive, you can reserve space for the file at the time of creation.
