A new year, a new push for Distributed RAID 6

Abstract

A new year, a new push for Distributed RAID 6

Body

Almost a full month into 2017 and I haven't tried to convince people that Distributed RAID 6 is the way to go.

Fortunately One of our senior architects has explained why even for flash you want RAID 6 on a guest post of Barry's blog:

https://barrywhytestorage.blog/

And there is a promise of a post about the advantages of Distributed RAID, hopefully it wont contradict my posts about the advantages of Distributed RAID.

Barry himself has written up some recommendations for configuring arrays for performance:

The rule of 4 has gone but there is a new rule of 8 or 16 for people to get hung up on.

Meanwhile there is a white paper about Distributed RAID, that was mainly written by our team out in India who were crucial to testing Distributed RAID.

https://www-01.ibm.com/common/ssi/cgi-bin/ssialias?htmlfid=TSW03521USEN&

The paper combines information that you may have found from our latest redbook and from the knowledge center plus a couple of worked examples. It gives a handy "what is Distributed RAID and how do I use it" in a small document.

All of this may leave you wondering why we implemented Distributed RAID 5, the simple answer is that when implemented Distributed RAID 6 it was only a little bit of extra development work to include Distributed RAID 5 and there are still some people out there who it is a sensible choice for, although with the capacity of SSD increasing that group of people is shrinking day by day.

Hopefully my next post will be more exciting, rather than linking to things you may have found yourself (I'm not sure how easy it is to accidentally stumble across a white paper though).
