How do you install a Network Security Controller (NSC) 1.x firmware update?
Answer
Download the update/hotfix
First, login to FixCentral to download the desired NSC firmware update and also review the associated readme.txt files for information regarding the state of the software.
Installation instructions can be found in the associated firmware readme.txt file bundled with the software. Here is a snip of that information related to "Applying the Update":
Root password (if needed)
This hotfix must be installed by the root user on your Proventia NSC appliance. If you have not done so previously, please follow these steps to specify a root password and enable this account:

- From Select Product Tab choose Security Systems.
- From Select from Security Systems choose IBM Security Network Active Bypass.
- From Installed Version choose All.
- From Platform choose All and click Continue.
- Select Browse for fixes and click Continue.
- From here you can select the version you would like to install.

- Using an SSH tool such as PuTTY, log into your Proventia NSC appliance as admin.
- Execute the following command:
cli set root_password YOURNEWPASSWORD - The root password is now configured. Please log out and proceed with the hotfix installation instructions below.
- Using an SCP tool such as WinSCP, copy the file nsc-update-10-fw1.0.3387M.sh to the "/" folder on your Proventia NSC.
- Using an SSH tool such as PuTTY, log into your Proventia NSC appliance as root.
- Execute the following command:
sh nsc-update-10-fw1.0.3387M.sh
Note: the command needs to change based on the file name. - The update installation will begin, and may take several minutes to complete.
- Once the update has completed, please power-cycle the appliance by unplugging the power cables from the back of it and then reconnecting them.
