Troubleshooting
Problem
Attempt to start IBM i NetServer fail with CPIB683 Reason code 13 - The retrieved host IP address of ____ is invalid.
Symptom
Users are not able to map network drives to the IBM i IFS shares.
Diagnosing The Problem
Failure to start NetServer (CPIB683) will be apparent in the QSYSOPR message queue:
===> DSPMSG QSYSOPR
Resolving The Problem
Find what the NetServer "Server name" is set to using IBM Navigator for i:

Then verify that that name resolves to a valid IBM i IP address:
===> ping '<MyNetServerName>'
If it does not, use CFGTCP to review the IBM i TCP/IP configuration.
First, use option "12. Change TCP/IP domain information" to verify the "Host name search priority" is set to *LOCAL. Also make note of the IBM i TCP/IP Host name.
Then, use option "10. Work with TCP/IP host table entries" to verify whether the IBM i NetServer Server name is listed in the host table and has the correct IP address of the IBM i.
Note that on many systems, the IBM i NetServer name does not match the IBM i TCP/IP Host name. Often, the simplest path to resolve the CPIB683, RC=13, is to click the "Expand Next Start" button in IBM Navigator for i and change the NetServer name to match the TCP/IP Host name of the IBM i. Then attempt to start NetServer again.
Alternatively, add the NetServer Server name to the local host table.
