My IBM Content Manager for iSeries Workflow Builder Version 5 Release 1 is not working on Windows 7

Question & Answer

Question

I've been running Content Manager for iSeries Workflow Builder successfully on Windows XP and now I need to upgrade my operating system to Windows 7. How can I make the Workflow Builder launch and run on Windows 7?

Cause

You can take a few corrective steps to allow the Workflow Builder to run on Windows 7. These steps involve locating some Java 7 programs, copying these new programs in place of the original ones in the Workflow Builder installation directory, and renaming them to names that the Workflow Builder uses.

Answer

The steps are as follows:

  1. If you have already installed Workflow Builder on your Windows 7 machine and have tried to launch it, then you'll first need to uninstall it through Control Panel, Programs, Uninstall a Program. It is listed as "IBM Content Manager for iSeries Workflow Builder."
  2. Install Workflow Builder normally along with Fixpack 15.  To accomplish this, the wmb015.zip can be downloaded from ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/as400/products/contentmanager/v530/wfb/ . After installation, do not launch Workflow Builder.
  3. Install Java Runtime Edition version 7 (32bit) on Windows 7.  You can download this from the Java web site http://java.com/en/download/index.jsp.  To check the version of Java you're currently running, follow these steps:

            a) Click Start
            b) Select Control Panel
            c) Select Programs
            d) Select Java.  This will bring you to the Java Control Panel.
            e) Click on the Java tab and then View the System tab.
            f) The Java product will be listed, which is the version, such as 1.7.0_45.  The path of your javaw.exe will also be listed.
  4. Copy java.exe and javaw.exe from the jre7 directory specified in step 3f above to the C:\WMB\bin directory.  Make sure you copy these files from the C:\Program Files (x86)\Java directory and not the C:\Program Files\Java directory.
  5. Back up and then delete the jre.exe and jrew.exe in the C:\WMB\bin directory. Next, rename the java.exe to jre.exe and the javaw.exe to jrew.exe.  These files will now have much more current dates than the previous jre.exe and jrew.exe files.

The Workflow Builder should now launch and operate on Windows 7.

Note: Some customers have found that changing the properties for compatibility on the wmb.exe file so that it runs in Windows XP Compatibility mode was also required for the Workflow Builder to execute properly.

If these steps do not fix the problem, please contact IBM software support for further assistance.
