MustGather: Rational Application Developer User Interface not Responsive

Troubleshooting


Problem

There may be times when the Rational Application Developer User Interface does not respond to user interactions. This is also known as a "UI Hang". This technote describes how to gather information, that will help IBM to solve this problem.

Symptom

The user interface no longer responds to user interactions, such as clicking on a button or a menu item. The product screen will not repaint. On Windows, a white bar can appear in the menu bar area.

Cause

The product runs many threads, but there is one special thread, called the UI thread, that responds to user interactions. If there is a long running operation on the UI thread, than the UI thread will no longer be able to respond to user interactions.

Resolving The Problem

There is a product preference for enabling a User Interface Monitor. It is found on this page: Windows -> Preferences, under the node General -> Performance Monitors -> User Interface Monitor.

To enable this monitor, check the check box labelled "Enable UI Monitoring".

In the future if the product's user interface becomes unresponsive, diagnostic information will be generated.

Contact IBM to open a PMR, and supply them with the generated information, and with a brief description of the operation that you were performing.
