Multiple SAP® HANA databases on the same machine

Question & Answer

Question

Can the Data Protection for SAP® HANA backup multiple databases on the same physical HANA appliance?

Cause

SAP® HANA supports an environment where there are multiple databases running on a single HANA appliance machine.

Answer

When there are multiple database instances on a single SAP HANA machine, it is possible to backup each instance using the Data Protection client.

When configuring the Data Protection for SAP HANA, run the setup.sh for each instance and use a dedicated Tivoli Storage Manager nodename for each database. Each database will have their own set of configuration files, initSID.utl file, nodenames, etc and will operate independently of each other.

The Data Protect for Enterprise Resource Planning manual has a section that describes this type of setup:

Note: SAP HANA Multitenant Database Containers (MDC) are not supported with the 6.4.1 release of the Tivoli Storage Manager for Enterprise Resource Planning.
