Resolving The Problem

For the MT5600BA MultiTech modem (MT5600 Series) to work for SDLC on the IBM System i products, the modem must be at a minimal firmware level of 1.702M. This document contains the steps to determine the firmware, update the firmware, and set the modem for SDLC.

Note: The factory default for this modem puts it in asynchronous mode.

    • - Verifying Firmware Level

Step 1: Verify that the MT5600BA was designed specifically for IBM. On the bottom of the modem, there is a sticker to identify the modem.

Caution: If this modem is not from IBM, flashing any firmware will destroy the modem.
      Display showing firmware version

Step 2: To verify the firmware level and to update the firmware level, the modem must be attached to a PC. However, before attaching the modem to the PC, it must be set for asynchronous mode so that the modem can communicate with the PC. Refer to the modem diagram above. Set the modem to the factory defaults to set it in asynchronous mode. To return the modem to the factory settings, do the following:
1.With the modem in idle status, press the down arrow until you see BASIC OPTIONS.
2.Press the right arrow until you see ONLINE OPTIONS.
3.Press the down arrow until you see RESET FACTORY DEFAULTS.
4.Press the right arrow, and you will see RESET TO FACTORY NOW?
5.Press the Enter key, and you will see FACTORY DEFAULTS RESTORED.
Step 3: Attach the modem to the PC.

Step 4: After the modem is attached and powered on, insert the setup CD that came with the modem. If autorun is enabled on the PC, a screen similar to the following is shown:

      MultiTech welcome wizard

Step 5: Click on Initial Setup & Country Selection, and choose Run Global Wizard From CD. Click Next, and the software attempts to locate the modem. If successful, a screen similar to the following is shown. Record the port. Click Next to continue, and select the country for the modem.

      Selecting Com Port

Step 6: To determine the firmware, on a Microsoft Windows operating system, open Hyperterminal. Click on Start > Run, and type hypertrm.exe. If this program is not found, refer to the operating system documentation. The next screens will take you through getting a terminal session to the modem.

Type a name for this description. Click OK.

      Connection Description

Select which port the modem is connected to. Refer to Step 5. Leave everything else as the default. Click OK.

      Dial properties

Choose 115200 for the speed. Leave everything else as the default. Click OK.

      Com Properties

Step 7: When Steps 1 through 6 are completed, you are shown a terminal screen. Type ATI3 (AT, letter I), and press the Enter key. The firmware version is shown. In this example, V1.702M is the firmware level. If the modem being tested is not at this minimum level, it must be updated.

      • - Updating Firmware

Caution: This is for the MT5600BA modem manufactured for IBM only. Updating the firmware on other MT5600BA modems damages the modem. Contact your IBM Hardware support for this modem to obtain the latest firmware version. After the modem is flashed, downgrading is not possible. Do not attempt to reflash the same firmware because this causes damage. Ensure all background programs are closed (anti-virus, anti-spyware, and so on) and the power save mode is disabled.

Do not download firmware from the manufacturer's Web site. Consult with IBM hardware support for firmware information.

Step 1: Follow Steps 2 and Step 3 in the above section to attach the modem to a PC.

Step 2: Go to www.multitech.com/SUPPORT/Families/MultiModemII/software.asp to download the Flash Wizard application to update the firmware. The included CD for the modem contains a Flash Wizard program; however, it is best to download the latest version.

Note: This modem is from the MultiModem II family. Ensure the Flash Wizard is compatible with the MT5600BA modem.

Step 3: Install the Flash Wizard program. Record the directory that this application is installed to.

Step 4: Download the firmware for this modem, and unzip it to the directory that the Flash Wizard is installed to. To find the directory, click on Start > Programs > find the Flash Wizard icon. If the icon is found, right-click on that icon, and go to Properties. The directory is listed in the Short Cut tab. In this example, the directory is C:\Program Files\Multi-Tech Systems\Flash Wizard\. This is where to unzip the firmware.

        Flash Wizard Properties

Step 5: Once the firmware is unzipped to the directory, run the Flash Wizard by Start > Programs > Flash Wizard. Follow through with the instructions until it is updated.

        Highlight the modem.

        Selecting Modem

Ensure the firmware level is selected and the port is highlighted.

        Selecting Com resource

Note: This process can take a while.
