RETAIN tip: H21250
Symptom
Users receive the following error in the Integrated Management Module (IMM) chassis Event log:
04/25/2013 12:20:08 0x806f070c2584ffff PLAT0126 Configuration Error for "Missing CPU" on subsystem "System Memory" |
The Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) log also may show the following message:
04/25/2013 12:20:08 Group (not a physical entity) (Memory - Missing CPU): Assertion: Configuration Error. |
Affected configurations
The system may be any of the following IBM servers:
- System x3850 X5, type 7143, any model
- System x3850 X5, type 7145, any model
- System x3850 X5, type 7146, any model
- System x3850 X5, type 7191, any model
This tip is not software specific.
This tip is not option specific.
The system is configured with two (2) Central Processing Units (CPUs).
Workaround
Ensure that any populated memory cards are installed in slots that have an associated Central Processing Unit (CPU) installed.
For more information, refer to the server's top cover label, the Problem Determination and Service Guide (PDSG), or the IBM Redbook.
The IBM System x3850 X5 Redbook can be found at the following URL:
Additional information
This event can occur if a user has a populated memory card installed in a slot that does not have an associated Central Processing Unit (CPU).
On x3850 X5 models, each CPU has its own memory controller and can control only the memory installed in their associated slots.
For example:
CPU 1 controls memory card slots 1
and 2 CPU 2 controls memory card slots 3 and 4 CPU 3 controls memory card slots 5 and 6 CPU 4 controls memory card slots 7 and 8. |
If a memory card with memory installed is placed in a slot that does not have a CPU, then the error will occur.
Dynamic System Analysis (DSA) logs will show all memory cards installed in the Vital Product Data (VPD) section (if VPD information is available).
However, DSA will not show any memory installed on memory cards that do not have an associated CPU installed.
